 The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is home to a unique species of wild pony known as the “Lindisfarne Pony.” These ponies are believed to be descended from horses brought to the island by the Vikings in the 9th century.
The ponies have adapted to the island’s harsh environment and are known for their hardiness and strength and are now considered a rare breed and are carefully managed by the Lindisfarne Wild Pony Association to ensure their survival.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne has a long history dating back to the 6th century when Saint Aidan founded it as a monastic settlement. The island became an important center of Christianity in England. The Lindisfarne Gospels, a beautifully illuminated manuscript produced by the monks, is now regarded as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon art.
The Vikings raided the island in the 8th and 9th centuries, and the monks were forced to flee several times. The most famous Viking attack occurred in 793 AD when the monastery was sacked, and many of the monks were killed. This event is considered the start of the Viking Age in England.
