Did you know?

While the Hollywood Sign is now a global icon, its original purpose was more practical. The sign initially read “Hollywoodland” with the “land” portion of the sign eventually removed. What started as a promotional billboard of sorts, it’s become the symbol of the world’s entertainment capital.

The Hollywood Sign has a fascinating history beyond its origins as a real estate advertisement. In 1923, the sign was erected by the Hollywoodland Real Estate Group to promote a new upscale housing development in the hills above Hollywood. The original sign was made of large white block letters and adorned with over 4,000 light bulbs, intended to flash the words “Hollywoodland” in a dazzling display. However, over the years, the sign fell into a state of disrepair, and by the late 1940s, the “land” portion was removed, leaving it as the iconic “Hollywood” sign we know today.

In the 1970s, the sign faced further challenges as it deteriorated, becoming a symbol of neglect. In 1978, a public campaign, led in part by Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, raised funds to restore and rebuild the sign. The renewed sign was unveiled in 1978 with the help of private donations, and it was maintained by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to its preservation.

For many years, the Hollywood Sign has undergone various restoration efforts, including replacements and upgrades to improve its structural integrity and appearance.

These days, it’s a symbol of the entertainment industry and a testament to the community’s efforts to preserve a piece of Hollywood’s history. The sign’s enduring presence continues to attract visitors worldwide eager to glimpse the glamour and allure associated with the city of dreams.
