Boulder, Colorado, is home to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), responsible for maintaining the U.S.’s official time and frequency standard.

A little history:

During the Colorado Gold Rush, Boulder, Colorado, was first settled by gold miners in the mid-19th century. In 1858, a group of prospectors discovered gold in the area and began mining along Boulder Creek.

The settlement around the mines was initially called “Columbia” but was later renamed the town due to the large boulders dotted the landscape.

It officially became a city in 1871 and quickly established itself as a center of education, culture, and innovation.

In 1876, the University of Colorado was founded in town, and the city’s population grew as more people moved to the area to take advantage of its resources and opportunities.

Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town flourished as a scientific and cultural advancement hub. The city was home to several prominent research institutions, including the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), as well as several arts organizations and museums.

Today, it is known for its progressive values, outdoor recreation opportunities, and thriving tech industry. Despite its rapid growth and modernization, the city has managed to maintain much of its historic charm and character, with many of its original buildings and landmarks still intact.
