A little history:

Also known as Madras, dates back over 2,000 years. The region around Chennai was initially inhabited by the Pallava, Chola, and Pandya dynasties, known for their impressive architecture and art.

During the 1500s, the Portuguese arrived in Chennai and established a settlement called São Tomé.

But the settlement was later destroyed by the Dutch, who took control of the region and built Fort St. George in 1644. This fort became the center of British operations in India and later became the capital of the Madras Presidency.

Under British rule, the city emerged as an important commercial and industrial center with the establishment of the East India Company and the Madras Stock Exchange. It would become a hub for trade in textiles, spices, and other commodities, which led to its rapid growth and development.

The city played a significant role in the Indian independence movement, with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari using the town as a base for their activities. After India gained independence in 1947, Chennai became Madras State’s capital, later renamed Tamil Nadu.

Chennai is a vibrant and modern city that has retained its cultural heritage and traditions, with its numerous historical landmarks, such as the Kapaleeswarar Temple and Fort St. George, and modern attractions like Marina Beach and the IT corridor in Taramani.

The amazing city continues to be a hub for trade, commerce, and education, with a thriving film industry and culinary scene that reflects its diverse heritage.
