In some countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated on a different day than in the United States. For example, in the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, usually in March. In Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on August 12th, the birthday of Queen Sirikit, who is regarded as the mother of the nation.
In Argentina, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in October, while in Russia, it is celebrated on the last Sunday in November. This shows that while the holiday has a universal theme of honoring mothers, different cultures and countries have their own unique ways of celebrating it.
A little history:
Anna Jarvis, often credited as the founder of Mother’s Day, was inspired to create the holiday by her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis.
Ann was a community organizer and social activist who worked tirelessly to improve public health and sanitation in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia. During the Civil War, Ann also organized women’s groups to care for wounded soldiers from both sides.
After Ann’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis dedicated herself to carrying on her mother’s legacy and worked to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday. She organized the first Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton in 1908, and in the years that followed, she campaigned tirelessly to promote the holiday across the United States.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, making it a national holiday. The holiday quickly became popular and commercialized, with greeting card companies, florists, and other businesses capitalizing on the opportunity to sell gifts and cards to show appreciation for mothers.
Despite her role in creating the holiday, Anna Jarvis became disillusioned with the commercialization of Mother’s Day and spent the rest of her life fighting against it. She even went so far as to file lawsuits against businesses that used the name “Mother’s Day” without her permission. Despite her efforts, the holiday continued to grow in popularity, and today, it is celebrated worldwide.
