Did you know?

Central City was once known as the “Richest Square Mile on Earth” during the Colorado Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, and over the next few years, more than $2 million in gold was extracted from the area.

A little history:

Central City, Colorado, was founded in 1859 during the Colorado Gold Rush. Gold was discovered in the area by John Gregory, a prospector who had been searching for gold in the mountains for several years. His discovery sparked a gold rush, and thousands of prospectors soon arrived in the area searching for riches.

It quickly became one of the largest and wealthiest towns in the region. By 1863, the town had over 10,000 residents and was the center of a thriving mining industry. The town’s economy was based on gold mining, with dozens of mines operating there.

Many of the most iconic buildings were constructed during this time, including the Teller House Hotel and the Central City Opera House. These buildings were designed to show off the town’s wealth and sophistication and remain essential landmarks in Central City today.

By the late 1800s, the gold rush had begun to decline, and many of the mines in the area had closed. The population began to decline as well, and the town struggled economically for many years.

In the 20th century, Central City began reinventing itself as a tourist destination, with many historic buildings and landmarks restored and preserved.

These days, the town is a popular destination for visitors who want to explore Colorado’s rich mining history and experience the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.
