Essentials for the Traveling Gal

If you travel a lot, you know the value of traveling light. Which can be a challenge if you also want to be chic and trendy. There is only so much space in a girl’s suitcase! My trick is to choose versatile pieces that easily mix and match. I pick neutral colors—white is a summer favorite of mine—that are fashionable but go with everything. I make exceptions for a few colorful favorites that stand out as accents. Luckily, fashion trends this season are diverse, allowing for comfort and ease.
Shoes: Like most of fashion this spring and summer, shoe trends are versatile. Designers are emphasizing comfort, offering a selection of flatforms, platform flats and chic versions of the classic espadrille. This is good news for a traveling gal like me.
Sunglasses: Bright lenses and frames are in vogue this season as are white ones. I don’t believe in attracting too much attention when I’m on the road so I got myself white frames. They are classically summer and chic.
Bags: When it comes to travel, having a comfortable purse is key. You need to be able to get to your ID and boarding pass at Security and to your wallet at the airport bookstore or coffee shop. There should be enough space for a water bottle, some essential toiletries, maybe a magazine or a tablet. I find the bucket bag to be perfect—it provides easy access but can also be elegant in a casual way. Designers have redefined the bucket bag this season—perforated, high shine or colorful leather. I’ve added this Tod’s Secchiello mini to my wish list.
Swimsuits: The spring/summer 2015 swimwear trends offer a rich assortment of styles, shapes and cuts. Retro, ruffles, animal prints, high-waist, and sporty-chic—anything goes this summer.
Sunhats: I never travel without a hat, often more than one. Hats protect you from the sun while lending a hint of elegance and mystique. There is a lot of choice this summer: fedoras, wide brimmed or floppy hats. You can’t go wrong. I’m crazy about wide brimmed hats but they can be hard to pack unless made of soft material. I usually buy the wire brim type that you can stuff into your purse and pull it out when you need it.
Jeans: A stylish pair (or two) of jeans is a must for the traveling gal. You can dress them up or down, an easy trick to lighten your suitcase load. Denim trends this year range from cropped wide-legged jeans to frayed mini and cropped straight-leg jeans. I love the mid-rise cropped jeans from Guess (the whites are particularly awesome in the spring/summer).
Dresses: Dresses come in all styles and colors this summer: shirtdresses, one shoulder cuts, black and white, blue and white, yellow and my all time summer favorite—white. With the help of a few key accessories, the white beach dress can turn into a stunning evening outfit. (Nookie, Dior, A.L.C.
Accessories:Marine symbols—coral, shells and sea urchins—as seen in this Valentino’s multi shells chain earings, replace last summer’s signs of the zodiac. Pendant necklaces are also big this year as are slogan bracelets and retro hoops.
