I’ve traveled near and far, globe trekking the world to investigate great places and spaces. Many locales have been outside my back door, others across oceans to exotic destinations.
With all the traipsing I do, there is a place I’d like to think of as my home away from home, the Lodge at Brush Creek Ranch.
Jaw dropping vistas, ranch activities that go above the norm, such as paintball, cattle drives, and creek side gourmand—if there is a heaven, this would be my slice of it.
Of course, I hope you take my advice by heading to this wonderland, but if there are any questions of how superb Brush Creek is, all one has to do is have a look at the many accolades bestowed upon them, including Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice #1 Resort in the US & #2 Resort in the World for the 2nd Consecutive Year and Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice #1 Spa in the USA.
Upon arrival, guests head over to scheduling at the Orvis building, just outside of the main lodge. All- inclusive choices are plentiful, with one adventure as a morning activity, and one for the afternoon. Other options are add-ons, such as spa treatments, barrel racing lessons, and fly-fishing. Activities include everything from a spa treatment in a Teepee, to skeet shooting, hiking or biking the trails around the property’s some 30,000 acres, and horseback riding, which can accommodate the novice to experienced rider.
My favorite experience is a half-day on the range with expert handlers for the cattle drive, which happens every other day, and allows riders to spy the other areas of the property they might not get the chance to see. Cattle, and adorable calves (depending on season) are moved from various acres around the property for feeding. It’s exhilarating to be out among nature and living a cowgirl’s dream here, if only for a little while.
Gourmet meals are served in the stunning main lodge, or in the open aired barn. One evening, a cowboy barbQ is served creek side, complete with local trio singing everything from old school country to today’s hits. Some guests bring along their own instrument and join in, making for a festive dining experience.
And the S’mores… let’s talk about those S’mores! Each evening after dinner, when guests move from table to fire pit, magically all the makings for this dessert appear—graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars. It’s the place where many of the 135 (only) guests chat about their day’s activities, and what tomorrow will bring.
Families tend to check out early most evenings, while others enjoy a top-shelf whisky in the Saloon, where a video game, billiards table and juke box, help set the rest of the night into play.
Don’t miss: Sunsets each evening by the open-air barn, when the ranch’s horses are released into the pasture. Witness them galloping and frolicking as the sun kisses the horizon. Magical!
