RECEIVES WORLD TRAVEL AWARD FOR SUSTAINABILITY

“Australasia’s Leading Green Hotel” Award is the Resort’s Second Win in the Category

VANUA LEVU, Fiji – Sept. 29, 2011 – Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort announces the World Travel Awards has named it “Australasia’s Leading Green Hotel” in 2011. In the selection process, 213,000 travel industry professionals in more than 160 countries worldwide voted for the most excellent travel providers. The World Travel Awards was launched in 1993 to recognize excellence in all segments of the global travel and tourism industry, and the voting process is monitored and independently audited.

The resort also previously received “Australasia’s Leading Green Hotel” in 2008, the first year the category was included, and has been awarded a total of seven honors by the World Travel Awards, including “Fiji’s Leading Resort” in 2009, 2008 and 2005. In 2007 it was recognized as “Fiji’s Leading Boutique Resort” and the resort’s Villa was “Fiji’s Leading Suite.”

“We thank our colleagues in the travel industry for their continued recognition of our commitment to sustainable and socially responsible travel,” said General Manager Greg Taylor. “We believe providing an unforgettable and authentic Fiji experience for guests includes supporting environmentally friendly practices and community interaction.”

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is an all-inclusive luxury resort overlooking Savusavu Bay. Surrounded by a pristine marine and island environment, this intimate, internationally acclaimed resort combines culture, environment, diving and water activities, wellbeing, relaxation and exceptional cuisine. Couples, families and water sports enthusiasts appreciate the resort’s varied offerings as well as its underlying social and environmental responsibility. Jean-Michel Cousteau, an impassioned diplomat for the environment, is also the founder of the nonprofit organization Ocean Futures Society, which explores the global ocean and educates people throughout the world to act responsibly for its protection.

The resort’s 25 one- and two-bedroom thatched-roof bures are scattered among the palm trees of this former 17-acre coconut plantation. Designed using environmentally friendly materials, each bure features a high temple ceiling, native timber floors and a private deck. The decorations exude tropical elegance.

The resort encourages guests to learn about and value the local Fijian traditions and island ecosystems by offering an exceptional range of complimentary resort activities. Cultural hosts introduce guests to the Fijian way of life through village trips and kava ceremonies. It is also the only resort in Fiji with a full-time on-site marine biologist—a native Fijian who leads guests on snorkeling trips, reef walks, and mangrove reforestation tours, and gives multimedia presentations on the local marine life, among other activities.

Water sports options for guests include diving with one of the world’s top dive operations, established by Jean-Michel Cousteau and dedicated to preserving the delicate reefs and their inhabitants. The resort also offers snorkeling, glass-bottom boat trips, informative tide pool walks and a giant clam restoration project.

For a touch of nurture and wellbeing, guests can indulge in a Fijian spa treatment in a beachfront spa bure. The ocean breeze and sound of the lapping waves contribute to total relaxation.

The rich and diverse cuisine of Fiji has evolved through the combined influences of geography, the indigenous Fijian and Indian population, and the bounty of the islands. Menus feature fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, grown in the resort’s extensive organic garden, as well as the freshest local seafood and fish.

About Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, recognized as one of the top resorts in Fiji, has received several major honors: it was featured in the book “1,000 Places to See Before You Die,” awarded a 2007 “Global Sustainable Tourism Award” by ISLANDS Magazine, ranked first on TripAdvisor’s 2007 “Top 10 Environmentally-Friendly Destinations” list worldwide, and listed as first in Fiji on the Condé Nast Traveler 2006 Gold List.

Pittsburgh’s Newest Luxury Hotel Recognized as City’s Only LEED-Certified Hotel

PITTSBURGH, PA–(Marketwire – September 20, 2010) – The Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel is pleased to announce that it has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) certification at the Gold level from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

“We are proud to continue Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ tradition of operational sustainability and responsible tourism here at the Pittsburgh location,” states general manager Leonard S. Czarnecki. “In fact, Fairmont Pittsburgh is the first LEED-certified project for Fairmont, and we are looking forward to growing our reputation as a responsible member of this community.”

To achieve Gold-level LEED certification, this luxury Pittsburgh hotel had to meet the USGBC’s strict sustainable design and construction guidelines. Some of the ways the hotel achieved and will maintain this certification include:

Recycled Construction Waste: Approximately 99% of waste created in the construction of this Pittsburgh hotel was diverted from landfills.

Energy Savings: By adopting Energy Star rated appliances and innovative lighting, the hotel will drastically reduce its energy usage and overall carbon footprint.

Water Use Reduction: Water conserving fixtures, such as low-flow toilets and aerators, will help the hotel save about 930,000 gallons of water annually.

Improved Indoor Air Quality: Building materials, such as low- and no-VOC paints and carpets, and dedicated ventilation units that supply guestrooms with 100% outside air, were chosen to optimize indoor air quality.

Green Materials: Building materials and furnishings were made from “green” or recycled materials. Many came from the Pittsburgh area, which helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation and supported the local economy.

Green Operations: Sustainable dining, a hotel-wide recycling program and green housekeeping products are part of this Pittsburgh hotel’s operations plan.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is recognized for its commitment to responsible tourism and its industry-leading Green Partnership program, which focuses on waste management, sustainability, and energy and water conservation at Fairmont properties.

For more information about this Pittsburgh luxury hotel, visit www.fairmont.com/pittsburgh.

Cousine Island- Grand Anse (Praslin), Seychelles

So…What about ’um?

Cousine Island is a haven for nature and man. This privately owned nature reserve is home to rare birds and breeding turtles, offering an exclusive tropical island experience combined with complete privacy. Guests take time to marvel at the simple things in life; the shape of a cloud, the sound of palm trees swaying in the warm breeze, the pleasure of leaving the only set of footprints along the dazzling sugar white beach.

On Cousine Island they live by the mission: “To promote and practice nature conservation and the wise use of natural resources of the island and its surroundings” and to share this philosophy with our guests. On Cousine Island it is possible to live for a time in another sort of world: the sort of world Seychelles was before the arrival of man, yet with every comfort modern man enjoys.

Since it first opened in 2000, Cousine Island has been constantly striving to create awareness for its dedication to conservation by participating in worldwide awards for sustainable tourism. These include prestigious awards in notably the UK and Continental Europe, as well as internationally recognized achievements, such as securing a global environmental fund by The World Bank.

By staying on Cousine Island the guests contribute to the funding needed to secure its future. All funds raised by Cousine Island are used to run the island. The guests’ information pack states that “tourism development is the only revenue generating activity purely to ensure the long-term sustainability of conservation.”

Cousine Island – a conservation success story offering a unique opportunity for escapism of the highest order with a degree of privacy almost impossible to find in the 21st Century.

Activities- How Cool!

Retallack Resort – Nelson-British Columbia, Canada

So…What about ’um?

Retallack is a legendary snowcat skiing and snowboarding destination located in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Its wilderness playground is the perfect location for the ultimate powder adventure, offering skiers and snowboarders some of the best back country terrain and snow anywhere in the world.

Retallack was the first cat- or heli-skiing operation to be awarded four green keys from the Hotel Association of Canada’s Green Key Eco-Rating program, meaning that it has been judged as showing “national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide-ranging policies and practices”. The quaint, timber-frame lodge and our 11 comfortable cabins hold a three-and-a-half star rating from the Canada Select Accommodations Rating Program, which reserves its three- and four-star ratings for “above average” and “exceptional” accommodation respectively. They are an active member of Helicat Canada and adhere to stringent environmental and wildlife standards. They are also one of the greenest operations in the back country skiing and boarding industry – not to mention among the most eco-friendly accommodation anywhere in Canada.

Retallack Lodge is named after a turn-of-the-century mining town that used to stand on the site where accommodations are now situated. Hopeful prospectors flocked to the area in the late nineteenth century, lured by one of the world’s largest silver mining booms.

Gayana Eco-Resort – Kolombong, Malaysia

So…What about ’um?

I love this Gayana Eco Resort, an enchanting Eutopia set on the shores of North Borneo, where the imperial rainforest rests untouched. A rich blend of mystical Mother Nature mixed with luxurious civilization lies only 20 minutes from bustling Kota Kinabalu City.

Thatched roofs humbly overlook the captivating South China Sea, home to giant clams and happy clown fish that greet delighted snorkelers and divers. Pulau Gaya Island is 95% composed of national parks and contains 40% of all wildlife native to Borneo.

They aim to create a reflective consciousness towards their marine environment. Malohom Bay has been restocked with an underwater marine garden containing all 7 of the giant clams native to Borneo, 4 of which were locally extinct.

All guests have to their own exclusive cozy suite, and can choose to stay in any one of our four designs. Each thatched roofed home possesses a modern interior with a touch of homely local flavor. Rimba suites present offer a beautiful view of the jungle and hills, while their terrace Pantai suites look out over our beautiful resort.

Bakau and Bayu suites Gayana takes room service to a supreme level. All orders will be delivered by gondola to a private deck where a personal butler will create an exclusive dining experience, set against a magnificent view. Imagine waking to a sumptuous breakfast, served on your own private balcony! This is top notch folks! All Bakau and Bayu suites come with their own floating deck. You can begin your day’s discoveries with a dive from your own balcony.
